About the author
J.D. Vance is a venture capitalist, author, and former Marine. He was born in Middletown, Ohio, in 1984 and spent much of his childhood in Middletown and Jackson, Kentucky, where he witnessed firsthand the challenges facing working-class Americans. After serving in the Marines, Vance graduated from Ohio State University and then attended Yale Law School, where he gained insight into the stark cultural differences between America’s elite and working-class communities. His memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, became a bestseller, garnering widespread attention and critical acclaim for its exploration of the struggles facing America’s white working class. Vance is also a prominent public figure, engaging in political discussions and exploring ways to address the issues facing rural and working-class communities.
